This article is an essay in an activity of Johnny's English Club.It is the second time that I join it.
Today's theme is "Hand-Me Down", "Osagari" in Japanese.
Last week Wataru Yokoo and Takashi Nikaido talked about gifts from Masahiro Nakai on the radio.
The outline is this;
One day, Mr. Nakai and Busaiku(Wataru, Toshiya, Kento, and Takashi), "舞祭組" attended the dinner party .
Takashi: "Mr. Nakai, could you give me your watch?"
Nakai: "It's OK. Here you are."(taking off his watch)
Toshiya: "Mr. Nakai, could you give me your outerwear?"
Nakai: "It can't be helped... OK. Here you are."(taking off his outerwear)
―After that, again...―
Kento: "Mr. Nakai, could you give me your sweater?"
Nakai: "Umm.....It's OK. Here you are."(taking off his sweater.)
Finally, Nakai wore only his shirt in winter!! Wow!!
This is how they got hand-me-downs.
To begin with, do you know a meaning of hand-me-down? According to Weblio and Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary,
a piece of clothins that the original owner no longer wants to wear. Before the period of rapid economic growth, a purchasing power was low in Japan and many people took it for granted that younger brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters wore hand-me-down clothing.
Yes, in the period of rapid economic growth, there were many brothers and sisters in one family. So I think that each brother or sister couldn't have his or her own clothes then and that younger brothers and sisters were given hand-me-downs.
Now, how about hand-me-down of Johnny's?
As for Johnny's, giving hand-me-down is carrying on the seniors' spirit.
Following are examples of Junta Nakama's costume
I was a big fan of him when he was Kansai Johnny's Jr.
●Hand-me-down from Junta's seniors
Junta would often wear hand-me-down concert costumes from Ryuhei Maruyama and Shingo Murakami.Ryuhei and Shingo have long legs, and so does Junta.*1
●Hand-me-down from Junta to his juniors
His juniors, especially Kansai Johnny's Jr, wear hand-me-downs now.Below is the most impressive hand-me-down cloth for me.
This is a black jacket having half of heart shape on the back. Now, Daigo Nishihata wears it.He often wears hand-me-down concert costumes from Junta and Akito Kiriyama.
Whom does a junior wear hand-me-downs from? What standard? Following is my opinion. First, the shapes of their bodies are similar. Second, suroundings and goals are similar (Kanto or Kansai / dance styles / the charactors of groups/...and so on).
In the point of view from hand-me-downs, we can see various things. By watching hand-me-down concert clothes, we can catch a glimpse of the talent's goal in work life. By seeing hand-me-down private things, we can know the friendly relations between the seniors and juniors.
Through their seniors' hand-me-downs, I hope that the Johnny's talents will carry on Johnny's good traditions more and more.
